I decided that it is finally time for me to write a review of Oma for our Beautiful Bicycles series. She and I have been together for nearly a year! For the occasion I put together an outfit and hairstyle inspired by her roots. Granted, I know very little about Holland – this is my interpretation of a vintage Dutch look, pulled out of my imagination.
Dress: vintage
Shoes: vintage
Cardigan: Cynthia Steffe
Bag: Chloe
Bicycle Locket: Makool
Earrings: made for me by bff Melissa
Helmet: Nutcase Starburst
Bicycle: Azor Oma
Of course, I don’t just dress up and pose in front of Oma, I actually ride her dressed like this (well, with my helmet on)!
Finally, I had to get a picture with my sweet kitty Chloe, a Norwegian Forrest Cat. Norway is close to Holland, right? ;) She cracks me up.
Cat: P.A.W.S. Chicago
These pictures became a post of their own, so the Beautiful Bicycles Azor Oma review is forthcoming :)
Happy Labor Day weekend!
you are adorable!
Greg is one lucky dude.
True Dat!
Awesome photos! Like the cat too. Have a good long weekend… :)
Holland is one of my favorite countries. I used to think of moving there and spent a month in Amsterdam. I don’t know if that’s the typical Dutch look (I think the Dutch both men and women like wearing loose pants), but if I saw you there, I would probably assume you were a native.
Lovely! How do you always manage to look like a model in the photos you post?
Ha, I take a crap load of pics and then discard all the ones where I have a double chin, squinty eyes, or a sour facial expression – which is almost all of them.
You’re an ideal Omafiets spokesperson.
love the following:
bag…swoon worthy.
shoes…i have a weakeness for mary janes w/ heels.
bangs (!!!)
bike locket
:)
Hey thanks for dropping by.
Your website is totally cool, love it and am going to bookmark it!!
I see you are wearing the bicycle locket (isn’t it lovely and goes with the Dutch theme).
You do look adorable! As does Chloe. Happy long weekend!
love the outfit!!! you’re so gorgeous and that kitty AWWW <3

Lovely!! Adore the shoes ;) how did you do the hair, looks lovely too :D look forward to reading review on Oma! xxx
Thanks. I was kinda going for the Heidi braid like yours here via Strawberry Koi Vintage. I kept messing up and eventually just threw a bunch of pins in it and called it a day :)
ahhh ;) I thought I recognised it, but thought was a variant ;) looks delightful on you, I think you discovered something new there!! xxx
What a nice de-lawyering! That is a very good look for you, from hair to cut of the clothing to colour-scheme. Looking forward to the Oma review. Oh, and you should invest in some wooden clogs!
I can’t get over how different you look. You looked great before, but as Lovely Bicycle says it’s a lovely de- lawyering.
And you are a tease! can’t wait for the review!!
Lovely photos. Unfortunately I’m allergic to kitties

Joining the queue of “lovely & adorable” but definitely un-Dutch: none of us have your sense of style. We’re notorious for that.
As for Norway: it’s close to Holland if you first travel part of Germany, then the length of Denmark and a good portion of Sweden, at least if you don’t swim the Kattegat. All quiet well-organised cycling country, flat too. Planes do it in an hour, so yes, seen through American eyes it’s close.
Americans think 150 years is a long time. Europeans think 150 miles is a long way. Or so I hear : )
True! Probably the atavistic idea of having to do it on foot.
Ironically the only Dutch style you have is riding without your helmet which you don’t typically do. The Dutch like to wear tight jeans, BIG high heeled boots that go up to their knee caps and black leather coats when riding. That’s not to say you don’t look lovely….just not Dutch.
Well, vintage Dutch, like 50 years ago. :)
Dean isn’t old enough to know, and I don’t remember. Really!
Would you consider raising your saddle about an inch? I know sitting lower brings the ground nearer, and for some that’s convenient but your body and stroke/cycle would work better if you raised the saddle a bit.
What’s the Oma weigh? Is it a three-speed or something else?
The whole thing looks profoundly sane! Bravo!
Milo.
Thanks, Milo.
You’re right. The saddle is lower than usual because it was undergoing some work and not totally fitted to me again. I’m a big proponent of high saddles and straight knees :)
My Oma is about 45 pounds. She is an eight speed, though I generally keep her in 5th gear.
So pretty! Both you, and the bike. Do you want to borrow Dougal for your basket?

I love this look! Especially the shoes!
Lovely! Your hair reminds me (don’t take that the wrong way) of a series of photos taken of Sylvia Plath with her children–love it! See what I mean here: http://www.emory.edu/EMORY_MAGAZINE/autumn_2005/assets/Daffodils.jpg
I too ride in skirts but have one little problem: keeping the hems down–not flying up or riding up my thigh. Not very modest! Any tips?
Hi Yvette,
I knew exactly which picture you were talking about before I clicked the link. I actually had that picture in my head when I was thinking about my hair with my new bangs. Sylvia Plath is my favorite poet, so this is fun to hear!
Tips for keeping hems down: my favorite trick is to clip a binder clip (like the ones used in offices) on the bottom inside hem of my skirt. This acts as a weight to keep the skirt down between my legs. Depending on how light the skirt is, this doesn’t always work. Then I either ride one-handed while the other hand holds down my skirt or plan to wear bike shorts underneath :) Another trick is to wear a garter belt and then stick a safety pin from your hem to your garter belt. Let us know how it goes!
More re: skirts. Here is a post we did a little while back that may be further help.
An adorable look I would say. Its a mixture of style and simplicity.
I liked it :)
Here are a few clips that should give you a nice idea of what cycling is like in the Netherlands. A trip there is definitely worth it. There is a nice Dutch breakfast resturant on Western just south of Lawrence if you are seeking more Dutch flavor.
Here is another nice videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTWOZ9eM-q4&feature=related
